just a cm tear in a non data page of a passport = no fly! Seems a bit jobsworthy to me.

Definitely a bloody-minded Jobsworth - they should have claimed she tore it (three words against one) and now sue her for costs.

but why should it disqualify? As long as the key data is readable I don't see a problem.

it does seem to be the rules. I can understand if it cannot be read but a torn blank page seems harsh:

Jobsworths.  Pumped-up by power little men/women.  Coming back to France one year I had the tiniest bit of perfume left in a bottle which would have held more than 100ml..  You've guessed it.  The jobsworth argued and wouldn't let it past.

Me?  I sprayed the remainder over myself (far too much I must have ponged the plane out!) tossed the bottle to him and carried on (reporting him to a superior on the way).

I can remember on one trip I had to bin my comb which they said was a dangerous weapon. I asked the customs man how can I maim someone with this???

Well anne thanks for your customary genius analysis. Yes it's damged we know that and yes they are the rules but we are really discussing the jobsworthery of the situation. Would you spoil a young mans trip for a tiny tear that does not obscure anything? Here is the tear it in no way hinders the passports function.

He might have been okay to leave the UK but what if there were issues when arriving in Spain or leaving at the end of the holiday?

I would think it's unusual to get an accidental tear in a passport, perhaps it flags up as being possibly tampered with?

TCL. Indeed, it's not uncommon for airports to be fined for allowing ( damaged) passport passengers to travel.
