Egyptian exchange

Can anybody confirm or deny the rumours I've heard about whether it's cheaper to exchange money in Egypt rather than here, prior to travelling?

If so, is my best bet at the airport, or at a bank/hotel/bureau in the nearest town?

Take US dollars the exchange rate is still very good and this is an accepted currency in most places.
