That web site is spouting garbage. It quotes the worst case for a non-British passport holder, not a general rule. And I really don't believe the 'yes' under 'return ticket required'
Assuming you have a UK passport it just needs to be valid when you leave Spain. In fact I've seen one source that I believe to be reliable that says a UK passport up to one year out of date is OK in Spain. I wouldn't want to rely on it though - Spanish Immigration knows it but the airline taking you there probably doesn't and won't let you board.
Still a good idea to renew your passport though - it will be valid until August 2016 and you'll miss out on any fees increases in the meantime
