Planning a weekend trip to Saltzburg. Is it better to stay in the city or is it easy to travel from hotels further out. Is travel pricey?

public transport is pretty good (or used to be, it's been years since I was there). But if it's only a weekend I'd aways recommend staying in the middle of town, as far as finance permits: you don't want to waste too much of your limited time commuting to the sights downtown.

I was in Salzburg for the weekend earlier in the month. With the exception of the castle (up a steep hill, but can be accessed by funicular railway), everything is within easy walking distance. The hotels in the old town tend to have traditional character. Try the Radisson SAS Hotel Altstadt.
