Without poking your nose in, what about giving a bit of support ?? . Discuss the places they are hoping to visit and show some interest in brochures and their reasons for these choices. I still cringe at some of the mistakes I made at his age but hey, I'm still here !!
By showing interest in their plans you are also expressing a show of confidence in your son which I'm sure will be appreciated.
Of course the trick in all this knowing when to keep your mouth shut and let nature take its course. And I still haven't mastered that one !!!
may have problems booking, because a lot of places don't like single lads, but you could suggest you go to the travel agents with him, they will be able to get into most clubs, and be served with drinks, apart from USA where you have to be 21 and they are strict. Travel insurance should not be a problem, but book that yourselves don't do it via travel agents they are very dear. And trust him,let him go with your blessing, just tell him to keep in touch via mobile & e- Mail.
Good luck
Newquay would be a good place for them to go. It is full of young people, they can camp or maybe stay in a surfers hostel. Only problem (not for you!) with the UK is that unless he looks 18 he will have problems getting in to any bars or clubs. In Newquay he will probably have even more problems since they have so many underage kids there, they are quite strict - no fake ID gets past them! But still, they could have a good time, they could have some surfing lessons, meet some girls their own age on the beach. There are usually some under-18s nights too, especially at the 'tall trees' night club.
If your son was ok with it, Newquay might even be the kind of place you could go together - you can drop them off at the beach in the morning and then see them in the evening, while you go for a nice walk or to a quieter beach... there are plenty of family dining pubs you can take them to and buy them some beers and keep an eye on them without embarrassing them too much.
