Bay of Biscay

Further to my earlier question, has anyone had a good experience cruising through the Bay of Biscay? Someone say yes, please, cos we've booked now ... !!

the secret is DONT STAY BELOW ! your eyes have to see so the brain can take in the movement of the ship/sea. i was told by another sailor to stand under the nearest xmas tree. there is one on the ship but not a tree like you think !

jaberwocky is it best to stand amidships, outside (with the wind lashing in my face?) !

'Fraid not! When I went it was terrible - nearly everybody was a decidedly dodgy shade of green and even some of the crew were poorly! But you never know, you could be lucky! :o)

well judiewudie, just have to see and take in the motion of sea/ship. don't suppose you'd have to be outside to look, just so happened that i had to work outside sometimes. if your hear the crew say 'batten down' worry! you'll be ok, i was caught in a typhoon and survived. bloody scary though.

Forgot to say, judiewudie, if it is bad you can always go to the ship's doctor and get an injection for about �20 which works wonders. Expensive but worth every penny if you are feeling really bad.

I sailed the Biscay, took 4 days on a 32ft yatch, was like a lake the first three days, then the fourth day was force 7 weather, high waves and very, very rough sea, was a total nightmare, but in a ferry, it is fine (I did that too) you dont notice it as much.

Although the biscay is notorious for it's bad weather, generally it isn't too bad

Husband and daughter had no problem - I felt dreadful (like morning sickness) stayed in the cinema watching "4 weddings etc" eating mint aero and after a couple of hours I felt almost OK. Done the journey millions of times before never any sickness. Luck of the draw.

Best tip I know, my hubby got sozzled and whilst everyone else was staggering along the decks, he was boldly striding along with ne'er a wobble, he went swimming and ate everthing he could. Get drunk judie and you'll feel fine.

Yes. Good one way, mountainous seas the other. Stay as far up on the ship as you can and make sure you are in the middle. That minimises any sensation. You'll be fine!

Best cure that I ever found for sea sickness (or any other type of nausea) is a Bloody Mary with plenty of tabasco in it. The nausea is caused by the liquid in your stomach sloshing around with the movement of the boat, and the hot tabasco numbs the stomach lining so your body can't sense the sloshing...so no nausea. I hear ginger works well too. But I don't understand the xmas tree thing!
