We always used to take the plane and hire a car when we got there. There isn't really all that much to do once you're there, though. Fantsastic beaches and loads of pubs. It's going back a few years so I don't know if it's still there, but on Jersey there was a theme park on the side of a cliff and you had to go in a cable car to get to it.
There are cheap ferries to the other islands. On Sark cars are banned and I remember going round on a horse and cart - which I thought was the best thing ever (I was about 6!) Elizabeth Castle is on Jersey and there's also an underground Nazi hospital from WWII - it was the only part of the British isles to be invaded during the war.
I don't think teenagers will be thrilled they're there but it's lovely and relaxing and little kids will love the beaches. I'm pretty sure everything's tax free too.
I don't know about Guernsey, we stuck to Jersey, Sark and Alderney (I think its called) but I don't think they're drastically different. I wouldn't mind going back actually, make a nice change.
