I am afraid that Hull was voted worst place to live in a book called Crap Towns.

As it was a book I would not take it too seriously.

Like a lot of cities in the UK, they grew up rapidly during the victorian era (1800s to 1900s), then were badly redeveloped after the second world war (in the 1960s and 1970s), and since then a lot of the local manuacturing business has gone.

This has left a lot of cities in the UK having to re-invent themselves to try to change their image.

It is true of Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, and many others, including Hull.

I would imagine Hull has its nice parts, and its horrible parts, like most cities.

It does have some advantages, you are near the coast, you are near York (one of the nicest cities in the UK), and you are near some lovely parts of the country.

I have only visited Hull once about 30 years ago so cannot comment on what it is like now.

vehelpfulguy is correct. It is worth remembering that there are lots of people who would not want to live anywhere in England, never mind which part of it. It is entirely possible that for you Hull will prove to be a very memorable place for all the right reasons. What matters a lot is whether your personal life is well balanced and that you make the right choices toward others with whom you are in contact. There are those who aim to follow a formulaic approach to making friends - typically joining the "correct" club, gym, etc. but I wonder whether the contrived nature of such things does not show to others (including those who are there for similarly artificial reasons). Friendships have a habit of developing naturally and often initially almost unnoticed. No doubt work is taking you to Hull so just get on with things and let things go their own way for a while and don't enter with someone else's prejudices or leap to conclusions too early. Some of the villages and towns surrounding Hull are really quite pleasant so you might consider at least visiting them if not (eventually) living there should you decide to avoid Hull proper. Best of luck.
