Used to be a busy industrial town in days of old but has had its problems in recent years. Don't think the locals would like to be counted as part of Newcastle though.
Beamish Museum is one of the top tourist attractions nearby but don't know if that would appeal to you.

Consett is a small place. (Philias Fogg crisp/nacho things are supposedly made their - Medomsley Rd, Consett) Like you needed to know that!
Beamish Museum is definately worth a visit if you're wanting to soak up the historical elements of the region, as is Durham (gorgeous city) and Newcastle for the fab nightlife. Consett has a few good pubs, but I've never hung out there personally.
This might be a bit late now but i work about 10 mins from Consett and it is a hole. There is nothing to do there locally it is known as the murder capital of ther North East - only last week a girl was stabbed near to death so the lad to make sure got in his car and run her over. The above answer is right in such as it used to be a steel town but that closed 20 years go and now has a massive drug problem. For something to do then go to Beamish, Newcastle or Durham as there is nowt doing in Consett
