what are the best things to do and visit in southern Ireland apart from Dublin?

Well it all depends what your looking for...the next biggest city after Dublin is Cork and the drive down is pretty boring though there are a few nice stopping off points along the way.....personally i'd recommend the West coast for the craic and the music. Give Galway and Lisdoonvarna a try and see what you think...other than that Donegal is beautiful and still quite nearby the real world.

Agree with sft - mainly the social scene is the thing to go for but there is still beautiful unspoilt scenery as well (connemara etc.). County Kerry ia also very picturesque and has some good beaches. Bring your raingear though! You can fly in to Shannon (just outside Limerick) with Ryanair.

Where are you from? If you are from the UK maybe you should concentrate on the west and south west a be taken back by the scenery....Clifden, Dingle, Aran Islands, Connemara (truly breathtaking) The cliffs of Moher, Donegal and the town of Castlemaine the home of The Wild Colonial Boy ( Jack Duggan was his name). Enjoy the some fabulous fish restaurants with Atlantic catches fresh ...Yummy Yummy. Pubs in the evening .....you'll find lots to do.

I had 2 of the best holidays of my life hiring a boat at Carrick on Shannon and going on it for 2 weeks. Got down to Limerick and back. Brilliant people and scenery.

Macgillycuddy Reeks are great (cool name huh?) as well as Carantouhill (think I've spelt that wrong) which is Irelands highest mountain. I've climbed it and at the top is a sort of hut built of stones with a statue of the Virgin Mary in it, that a farmer built hundreds of years ago and he dragged each rock up individually. I did it whilst carrying just a bottle of water and it killed me!!! Other places to definately try and visit around Cork and Killarney are Ring of Kerry, Ladies View (on the Ring of Kerry - amazing scenery) and the Gap on Dunloe -take a pony and cart ride through there, breathtaking! Enjoy!

You cannot miss out on Galway city (if you could call it that) on a trip to Ireland. Its very beautiful with a relaxed studenty/arty atmosphere and there are great places to drink the night away.

Having read your question I was going to suggest heading out to Connemara in County Galway ... then I realised that nearly everybody else has suggested the same thing ... then I thought why not add my recommendation. We've had some brilliant holidays there. Clifden makes a good centre for your stay and there are loads of holiday cottages available in the area. All of the islands are worth a trip - the Aran Islands are amazing (esp. Dun Aengus Fort), and Inishbofin is great too. A great place to unwind from the stresses of life - I wish I was there!

I would recommend you avoid big towns in order to get the real feel of Ireland. There are tonnes of tourist attractions, such as Ballinamore, Co. Lietrim (http://homepage.tinet.ie/~ballinamore/) or Cashel in Co. Tipperary. But whatever you do, you MUST frequent the village pubs in the evenings to get a true taste of the Irish!!!

You've prob already been on your holiday at this stage! But I thought I'd add my 2 cents anyway. I love Waterford city! It's a beautiful place, built on a river, not so big that it feels like Dublin but theres still a brilliant selection of shops, gorgeous little bars, cafes & restaurants and a fabulous visitors centre.Theres loads of history in the place and the streets are still narrow, winding & cobblestoned,a reminder of its Viking origins. Fantastic place. Hope you'd a good holiday anyway wherever you ended up going!

Well as an English person living in Dublin and having travelled much of Ireland I can recommend the following: 1) Wicklow Mountains/Sally Gap Adventure - Beautiful Scenery. See where parts of the films Braveheart was filmed. 2) City of Galway - fastest growing city in Europe. It has a mix of traditional and modern Irishness! 3) Newgrange - Stone age tombs, sacred sites and observatories over 5000 years old. 4) Powerscourt Gardens - beautiful in the summer especially the Japaneese Garden.
