The Lakes
8 Answers
Hi folks
I'm off to the Lake District for a few days at the beginning of August. I've been a few times to Windermere and few of the larger, more touristy places. Can anyone suggest any nice places that are a little quieter, picturesque, few nice pubs etc.... And/or some nice hotels? Thanks in advance.

Can I suggest you go round to the WEST of the Lake District. It takes longer to get there, but for that reason the area has far less tourists.
If you are entering from the South then you drive round the south of lakes Windermere and Coniston and then you could stay in the quieter west side.
Here you can see beautiful lakes like Wastwater, Ennerdale, and Crummock Water in relative peace and quiet.
I have stayed at Ravenglass in the past, also at Boot, a lovely village near Eskdale.
I have stayed at a self catering cottage on Fisherground Farm near Boot.

Probably my favorite place in the world, and my favorite view.
This view of Waswater shows the screes on the right, one of the most dramatic views in all the Lake District.

If you REALLY want it quiet and picturesque then try the Wasdale Head Inn.
This is RIGHT at the tip of Wastwater lake and is surrounded by hills everywhere.
It is a pub come guest house so combines your wish for a nice Hotel and a nice PUB.
