If you held a British passport previously then you do not stop being british just because you have not lived in the UK.

You can also re enter the Uk on your expired British passport. You have right of abode in the UK and no one can take that away from you.
If you go to the British Embassy / Consulate in Ireland they can issue you a new passport. Remember you are supposed to have 6 months validity to travel, so renew early!
You dont need six months validity if you are travelling from Ireland to UK
You can renew your UK passport at any British Embassy/Consulate/High Commission in the world - it doesn't matter where you live.
