I recently went down to London to visit a friend and payed 60 for a saver return to Colwyn Bay in North Wales....

Anyway, I was talking to my stepmum and she seems to think that if you book a month in advance it becomes much cheaper and is only about 30....

I am not sure if she has a railcard, but could anybody tell me if this is true because It would come in very handy for me !

Yes this is true, only you have to be much less flexible and book yourself on to a specific train (date and time) and if you go on a different train to this your ticket is invalid. Just go into your train station and they'll be able to book you an advance ticket from there, and tell you all the different savings you can make ( it might vary from area to area but with mine, its cheaper the longer ahead you book it, so if you book a month in advance its really cheap, 2 weeks in advance and its more expensive, one week in advance, bit more expensive etc) Otherwise, virgin trains website do sicounted tickets, and the trainline.com.

Yes it can be much cheaper if you book in advance.

Virgin have 3 different categories of cheap single tickets. All are in theory available up to 6pm on the day before you travel, but they often sell out well before this - obviously the cheapest category goes first.
From Colwyn Bay to London they are 15.50/21/26 less railcard discount if you have one.

You are tied to the specific trains you book for.

If you are lucky you can get the cheapest ticket the day before you travel - if not they can all be sold out a month in advance.
