When traveling to the USA from the UK can you take alcohol not purchesed from duty free if it is going as a present ror some one if so how much.

Yes - it makes no difference whether it's bought duty free or not, you can take the same amount. You cannot double your allowance by taking some duty free and some duty paid, you only get the one amount.
