The Ffestiniog railway is great, and when you get to Blaenau Ffestiniog you can get a bus to the Llechwedd Slate Caverns (not a v good service, perhaps try to find out timetable on web beforehand). We went, got off train and got to bus stop only to find no buses that day, so ran back to the train, returned to Porthmadog, picked up our car and then drove to the mines. The mines were excellent so a trip there is well recommended (it was a rainy day but you're underground so it doesn't matter). Llanberis has a good hydro electric visitor centre, found in centre of town.
Lovely part of the world, do enjoy.
Portmeirion, The Prisoner village, is just next door. There's plenty of shelter in case it rains but if the weather is good then they should enjoy it.
