I've read that only EU residents can travel on the ferry from Tarifa to Tangier. Does anyone know if this is correct? We're hoping to go there for a day trip with some Canadian people, but are not sure they'll be allowed to travel on the ferry on Canadian passports.

Also, has anyone done a day trip to Tangier from Tarifa? Any information on hiring an official guide, or what not to do, would be appreciated.

We've been to Morocco several times, so are aware of the culture, but we've never been there on a day trip from southern Spain.

Thanks.

They will be able to travel. The rule about EU only was dropped a few years back.

You will probably be approached by an official guide in the ferry terminal in Tangier. If you decline their services you will be pestered by boys/young men outside the terminal who are exceedingly reluctant to take no for an answer and will follow you around all day.

Thanks for that. dzug. Just one thing - how does one distinguish an official guide from an unofficial guide?
The ones in the terminal will be official - they don't let any others in. I think they have a badge but am not 100% sure. They take no for an answer.

The unofficial ones will be outside - probably jeans and t-shirt. They seem to know several languages but not 'no' in any of them.

Thanks a lot dzug. Sorry - I said just one more thing, but there are a couple more questions. Is the port far from the town? How do you get into town with your guide in tow - walk, bus, train, taxi?

I know Morocco pretty well, so won't be surprised by the culture, but I'd really like to know exactly what I'm doing when we go on this day trip, simply because we're taking our Canadian friends, and for them Morocco is going to be a real experience. Any more advice you can offer will be very gratefully received.
It's not that far - we walked (10-15 minutes? maybe not that) but there will be a line of taxis both large and small if you don't want to.
