Can anyone recommend a good / quick optician in Bangkok please? I'm going to Pattaya for a couple of weeks, but intend to visit Bangkok for 1-2-3 days. I wear variafocals and thought it would be cheaper to get an eye test and new goggles there.

Eye tests in Thailand depend entirely on the language ability and the skill of the tester. Much better to get the test in the UK and the glasses in Thailand. I go to Bangkok Nursing Home (BNH Hospital) for my tests. To buy glasses try one of the outlets in a major shopping mall - much more likely to speak English to a conversational level. However, I am not aware of variafocals being a big thing here, so may not be widely available.
I always get my glasses made up in Bangkok. We go to Washington Optical which is on the ground floor of the Erawan plaza [there is a Starbucks and a Boots on the outside]. Speak good English and do a great job in a few hours. Direct connection to Chit Lom station.
