I have been to Port Aventura which is a combined hotel complex and theme park which is just on the edge of Salou.

I have only been down to Salou for a couple of hours but have to say I was not impressed.

It has a long wide beach, and a nice wide walkway (prom) at the back of the beach but most of the town is just hotels, bars and tourist shops.

It is worth going to the Port Aventura theme park if you can. Only a short bus or taxi ride from Salou, but it is amazing. One of the best theme parks i have ever been in.

You can read more about the theme park here.

Hello mnko, I went to Salou a couple of years ago and, like veryhelpfulguy, was not impressed. It's very unkempt and dirty - to say the least. Broken paving slabs, litter, beach covered in cigarette ends, graffiti! On the plus side Port Aventura is very good. It's worth a good few days out it also has a water park which I believe is nice and clean (although I didn't go myself). There is a water park in Salou (can't remember the name) but it was pretty disgusting. I suppose it depends on what you're expecting. I met people who loved it and have been back time and time again. I think my problem was that I'd been to much cleaner places for previous holidays and found Salou terrible in comparison. Personally, I think the Spanish should clean up their act if they want the money from us tourists! Sorry.....sore point as you can probably tell. I think we should boycott Salou!!!
I hope we have not beeen too hard on Salou, it is not AWFUL, just rather bland.

Here is a few pictures to show it is not too bad.

Here is the beach, with the marina at the front. You can see the wide walkway at the back of the beach

Here is a picture from the other end, looking towards the marina

Here is a small example of the tourist shops, of which there are hundreds, selling towels, football shirts, football, dolls, t-shirts with obscene slogans on them, and all sorts of other things

And here is a picture of Dragon khan in the theme park. More loops than any ride in Europe.

So it is not all bad.
sorry........maybe I was a bit harsh. My hotel was lovely - very clean and the food was gorgeous. I'm sure you'll have a lovely time. Enjoy your holiday. :o)
I went to Salou last Septemeber, I went with my family and boyf (ages 9, 10, 21, 22, 45 and 46) we felt there was something for all of us. we all really loved it we stayed just outside Salou but visited Salou often. We loved port aventura and costa carribe spent a couple of days there.
As I said theres something for everyone, loads of restraunts, bars, shops, nightclubs (but the drinks can be a rip off in the clubs). The beaches and sea are lovely and clean and have water sports on most of them, and the locals seemed pretty friendly too. When we went it was really hot never rained once but it had rained all week before we came.
Barcelona is not too far away and cheap to get too, we spent a day there. I def reccomend it. We stayed in Valencia hotel which was v cheap, all inclusive, and was good for the money.
I hope you have a good hol!
