whats the best airport to fly into new york?

Whats the best airport to fly into new york with regards to getting to the tourist sites like times square, maddison square garden and the like, is it jfk/newark. i dont want to spend fortunes on cabs from the airport.

I'm sure JFK has a subway connection to Penn Street Station.

LaGuardia is the closest to Manhattan, located in the borough of Queens. JFK International Airport is also in Queens, but a little farther from Manhattan. Newark is in New Jersey and is by far the farthest from the city.

All three are served by major airlines but one or two tend to dominate each airport. LaGuardia gets my vote, but that's from years of flying there as a commercial pilot...

I've always found Newark, and then buses, to be the easiest way, as long as you're staying reasonably close to a bus stop. On trains, you have to change trains, which can be awkward if you have luggage. If you're with a group, take a cab which can deliver you to the door and will cost less split however many ways. Or go to a hotel that offers shuttle services.

I went recently and flew to Newark. Go to the Ground Transportation Centre in whichever airport you fly to and they will find you the most convenient method of transport (it cost us $13 to get to our hotel in central manhattan, and $17 to get the other way so it isn't wildly expensive).

Not sure if it is further away than other airports but it wasn't a long bus journey and we were able to get a good view of the city on the way (saw the statue of liberty out the window etc)

When I have flown into NY, I tend to use Newark or JFK. There is a train station at Newark airport which takes you into the city. It took about an hour.

JFK they have built a the train out to near the airport, but you still need to get an airport train to take you to the actual train station. Have also got cabs from JFK, and although can't remember exactly how much they were they were probably $80. There is a flat fee.

There is a very reasonable flat fare from each and every airport to manhatten, times square or the hotel district (doesn't matter which hotel). You won't be ripped off by a taxi, the city has gone to great lengths to smarten up the taxi services. A taxi is cheaper if there is more than one of you. On your way back, ask your hotel reception to give you a quote for a "car service" to the airport - basically thier version of a luxury minicab - they have set fares too, or an hourly rate. Either will be better than hailing a cab in the city to go OUT to the airport.

cab fare into Manhattan from JFK is fixed at $45, I think. Beware, though - it's not fixed on the way back.

From JFK you can get the new Airtrain to connect to the subway system at Jamaica; it cost $5 one way for the Airtrain and you can get a Metro pass (for the subway system) for $21 for 7 days that will take you anywhere in the city anytime - brilliant value. From Jamaica you can get the subway to any part of Manhattan; there's a free map (pick it up at a subway station) that's easy to follow once you get the hang of it.
