What's the cheapest way of making a booking at a 5* hotel for a weekend in London? Is it better to contact the hotel directly or go through a travel website? Also is it cheaper to book a long time in advance or last minute?

Sorry for the list of questions!

We booked yesterday in a 4* for Dec. looked online first for theatre breaks then tried to see if I could book hotel, theatre etc. individually but it took ages so in the end we went to travel agents and they got us the best deal with everything in. Hope this helps.
Look at www.lastminute.com - Top Secret hotels. 5 star hotels at much cheaper than usual prices. The catch? You dont know where you are booking a room! The website gives a description and a photo but doesnt give you the name. My partner and I successfully guessed a description for St Martins Hotel and we got a room there for 150. Great!
Try here. We've had some great deals, and cheaper than hotels own rates, with no un-welcome 'add-ons'.
have a looksee at this to compare anyway!

be careful when booking a 5* as there is a LOT of difference in them, e.g. the Hilton isnt very posh at all wheres the Bently (a kapinski hotel) in kensington is amazing! (both can be found on lastminute at reduced rates)
