Why are there so many streets in Nottingham with the word gate at the end eg Friargate, Fletchergate

Saxon = yat
Norse = gata
Basically gate means a street.

There used to be a wall around the city and around the wall were many access gates.

It isn't just Nottingham

In Leicester we have Horsegate and Gallowtree Gate

and in london we have aldgate, moorgate, etc. all in the area where the old roman wall was when the city was a wee bit smaller!

Chester has Foregate Street, Newgate Street, Watergate Street and Northgate Street.

Preston has Fishergate and Friargate.

All were where there were gates in the walls, in Chester they are mostly still there.
