This might be silly, but i am thinking of flying to London from Manchester. Will i need a passport to do this?

Maybe not specifically a passport but you may have to show identification, ie a driving licence. Try the airlines website, or ringing or emailing them

i think you require some idenfication with your picture on it but no doubt we have abers who will be able to give you the most up to date advice.

You require Officail ID that has a photo of you on it. A driving licence or passport would do, but not a works ID.

the thing is, my passport has just expired. will it still count as ID?

Each airline has their own rules. Some airlines (e.g. Ryanair) specifically state that they will NOT accept ANY expired document as evidence of ID. Others might do so. The only way to find out what is acceptable is to check the airline's website (or phone them up).

The main airlines operating scheduled services between Manchester and London are as follows:
VLM (from London City)
BA, Jet2 and Zoom (all from Gatwick)
BMI & BA (both from Heathrow)
Air Berlin and Eastern Airways (both from Stansted).
