What is the greek for sand? Any ideas?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ."Ammos" is indeed the Greek for sand; the only "Amathos" I'm aware of is the one in Cyprus (though there may be one in Greece), and it takes its name from an ancient king, and has nothing to do with sand. On the other hand, the Cypriot town we Brits know as Famagusta is "Ammochostos" in Greek - roughly translated as "sandy shore" - not to be confused with Sandie "Puppet On A String" Shaw..........
