My Mum is going to San Francisco for her 70th birthday soon. Would anyone know if she would be entitled to subsidised travel on public transport? I've been on the tourist info site for SF and it looks as if seniors can buy cheap weekly & monthly travel passes for the trams & buses, but I'm unsure if this is just for US residents. I've tried to email the information centre, but they didn't get back to me.

Your mother's passport should be sufficient ID.

All public transport in SF is run by the 'Muni' (Municipal Railway). Information about discounted fares (& ID) is here:

General information about Muni fares (together with links to maps & schedules) is here:

Thanks Chris. Had a quick look at the links - it looks as if she would be able to buy a discounted pass. It'll be quite a saving (both in money and on the legs - those hills!)
Your mum will love San Francisco. We used the cable cars a lot, I got a discount on travel being over 60, they are great. And Alcatraz is a great trip. We found it so interesting. I hope she has a great time.

Thanks guys.

Goldfish - can you also print her a list of the restaurants that offer senior citizen discounts from this website too please? We are big on Senior Citizen's Discounts in restaurants here and even some of the larger chain drugstores - which sell way more than just drugs - kind of like a mini department/grocery store offer them too!!! Even the supermarkets will usually offer them one day per week. Being an old lady myself, I just always ask - because sometimes they are afraid they will offend you by thinking you are old enough for them.
Sorry Goldfish - forgot to include the link :) I guess I had a "senior moment".

Wrong link - don't know what is wrong with me tonight!!!

This list doesn't list ALL the restaurants with Senior Citizen's Discounts - but will give her an idea anyway - most are about 10% off - which isn't bad really. Just tell her don't be shy - just ask everywhere she goes if they have them!!!

Thanks again. My partner & I are going too and we're all looking forward to the trip - going to Las Vegas as well.

Back now - a travel pass for a month was just $10. Great saving - it paid for itself almost immediately. Valid on all buses, trams, cable cars & trains.
