summer holiday
Can anyone suggest a good place to holiday in August for me and my family (2 boys aged 16 and 14 and a girl aged 12). The children like to be doing things constantly (theme parks etc) and would like to stay somewhere with children of a similar age. I on the other hand like the weather to be warm but not too hot (we discounted Florida because of the 90+ temperature in August). Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks

If you want to go abroad for warm temperatures - but not long-haul - and you want activities for youngsters, then you are really limited to the Med. or Canary Islands. I would suggest the Canaries as the temperatures are moderated somewhat by the Atlantic. The Med. will probably be as hot as Florida. The Canaries can still get very hot on occasion though and the sun is very strong. However, Lanzarote and Tenerife in particular will have a lot for you and the kids.
Madeira is another option but the island is preferred by older visitors. You could go into Europe for a City Break but that's only if you and your youngsters like cities. It sounds to me as if you would prefer a coast holiday. There are also many other resorts further north in Europe but then you take a chance withg the weather. You could always go further afield, but that depends on you and your pocket.
There are huge numbers of holidays for sale in so many different locations at that time - it's a very big world! I would suggest the Canary Islands.

Yes, Florida is hot in August, but every car, home, hotel, restaurant and shop is air conditioned (and very efficiently). In the theme parks there are lots of water fountains to get drinks of water, plus water sprays and misters to cool you down. I don't generally like hot weather but coped admirably in Florida last July/August. Apart from everywhere (except outside!) being air conditioned we had our own villa (again, air conditioned) which had it's own pool and jacuzzi - brilliant for keeping cool!
The children really wanted to go to Florida, but I was concerned about the heat. I suppose it's like all things really - you do them in moderation. If we were out every day at the theme parks, not only would it be exhausting and expensive but stupid to be out in the mid day heat. I shall have a re-think about Florida now. Thanks very much.
