- People trying to blag upgrades
- People who are flying standby
- People who have a onward connection to make, which is looking dubious due to a late flight departure
- People not ticketed to sit together, who want to sit together
- People who have hand luggage, which at the gate is deemed not suitable to take on the plane
- People making late meal requests
- etc etc etc!
