Edinburgh to Derby via train

Does anyone know of any routes i can take to lower the cost of getting to edinburgh from derby

When do you need to travel?

The fare is only �15 each way, on the direct route, if you pre-book, far enough ahead, on off-peak services. You won't get a lower fare on any other route.

If you're travel needs are more immediate or you can't travel off-peak, tell us when you need to travel, giving dates and times in both directions (if it's a return journey). Then we'll be able to investigate the possibilities for you.

where are you getting your 15 quid each way from? i looked on national rail and its saying it like 69 quid

I've also been referring to the National Rail website.

The 'walk-up' single fare (Standard Open Single) between Derby and Edinburgh is �69.50. The Standard Open Return fare is double that, at �139, but (as long as you can travel at appropriate times) you can buy Standard Saver Return for �85.90.

To check the off-peak pre-booked single fares, I simply selected a suitable 'quiet' day. (I chose the Tuesday after next, 21st November). All direct departures, from Derby to Edinburgh, up until 0942 are only available at full fare (�69.50). The 1042 and 1142 trains are both bookable for �15. A seat on the 1242 service is slightly dearer, at �21. The price drops back to �15 for the 1342 train but from 1442 onwards the price reverts to �69.50. (I've not checked all departures from 1442 onwards but that fare certainly applies to the first few trains).

I've done a quick check on a few other dates (and also on trains in the opposite direction). With a bit of flexibility, it's not difficult to find single fares of either �15 or �21in either direction.

My thanks Chris. Although unfortunatly as it transpires i must travel at peak times. Although my sister in her infinite wisdom has told me about this site called www.megatrain.com and so long as i can get a train/bus to manchester i can get to edinburgh for 13 quid from manchester!!!

Notwithstanding Chris's detailed answer you can find all the fares yourself on the web. It is nearly always cheaper to book two singles rather than a return.

It doesn't matter which rail site you use as they are all linked to the same server.

Instead of paying extortionate train fares, could you not instead travel by air? Flights between Edinburgh and Nottingham East Midlands Airport are available with bmibaby. There are three flights a day Monday to Friday (I'm not sure about weekends).

The flights take less than an hour and you can currently book flights for 30.93GBP (including tax).
