contact in Japan

Next March I am going to Japan - I have recently been widowed and when I'm away, I want to feel in touch with friends and famly at home [security, I think!]. Should I buy a lap top to do this or is there a mobile phone which I can use to email and speak? I like the idea of a lap top as I can play the games that I play on my computer at home too as well as banking etc.. rosemary
