There are all these hotels to choose from, but having never been to Amsterdam before, I don't know which location description sounds the best.... http://www.amsterdam-hotels-guide.com/site/get rooms.asp

does anyone have any hints, or are they all roughly the same, as long as they are roughly in the centre?

Get yourself to the AmstelBotel. Get to Centraal station. out the doors, turn left 200/300 yards there's an old floating hotel anchored to the quayside. cheap, and take a stroll out the hotel , across the bridge and your in old amsterdam !!!!! watch out for the trams, they don't give a ***** ! Enjoy!!!
