Hi guys, in Nov or Dec next year I plan on going travelling on my own for the first time (I'm 20 at the mo), prepare for alot of travel questions from me in future!
Basically, I'm scared to death! I plan on spending a few months in New Zealand and then another few months in Canada. The main thing I'm worried about is accomodation. I know the usual thing for people to do is stay in hostels and I know this is the best way to meet new people, but I really don't think I'd feel comfortable living with people I've never met etc. Also, I have no idea what I'm supposed to do being by myself and all. Does anyone know of any other cheap options for accomodation? And any other travel advice would be much appreciated!!!

I can't tell you how grateful I am, thanks guys

What's your budget... anything other than hostels (apart from camping) will cost you a lot more...
ive stayed in a lot of hostels in australia - they realy are great for meeting people and getting lots of ideas and opinions of what to do and where to go - all of the places ive stayed in had different types of rooms that sleep different amounts of people so you could probably get a room to yourself (prob be a double bed ? more money ?)but you would probably have to book it in advance but when i stayed in rooms with upto 7 others i never felt uncomfortable - im sure some rooms are single sex and some are mixed ?
There are lots of places to stay here in New Zealand. Most towns have places like B&Bs and motels for you to stay in. I dont the prices but generally the costs over here are around a third cheaper than in the UK. Obviously the cities have good accommodation and probably have lots of hostels for young travellers to stay in. Camping is pretty big out here too.

But well done you for going on your own. You are a braver woman than I am. Good Luck
I think maybe you are just 'apprehensive' rather than 'scared to death' otherwise you wouldn't even be considering it... once you are out there, experiencing all the fun of new places and new people you'll love it... I personally love to travel 'alone'... it makes you meet new people and you'll end up doing different things than if you were in a comfy group of friends...
awww :) I too was apprehensive when I did a little of it when I was 19! Heh heh can I join you so it wont be so daunting? I am serious!
yes Im 25 now

Anyone is welcome to come along! :D
Hi indie,

Last July/August I spent 5 weeks travelling around NZ on my own. I'm 54, never travelled alone before and thoroughly enjoyed it. I stayed in backpacker hostels, always asked for a single room and prices varied from $25 to $55 per night.

I did a Magic Bus tour, hired a car for a while and am going back for another 5 weeks this year!

I presume you have(or will buy) a good guide book. I prefer the "Rough Guide" but others swear by "Lonely Planet".

Look forward to it, get planning and fire away with the questions.
:) ok indie you can email me if you like, its: [email protected]
