How can Kiribati and Hawaii be so close together, yet they are 24 hours apart??

the same reason you can leave new zealand in the evening, and arrive in LA the same morning?
The International Date Line runs between Kiribati and Hawaii. Anyone crossing it will either find themselves one day ahead, or one day behind (depending upon the direction of travel), the date which applied before they crossed the line.
