Car Hire in Italy...

I am amazed at the price of car hire in Italy compared to France/Spain - does anybody know why it costs so much more............and can anybody recommend a reasonably priced company? ...........thanks

Agreed, exactly my experience. Only a week ago I hired a car there: I used BMIbaby Extras, the cheapest I found. I assume they would be happy to hire to anyone whether flying with them or not.

Thanks Karl - I'll check that one out.
think insurance, (car, property and person), then think italian drivers, italian roads, italian police and italian legal system......if you have an accident in a car in italy you are unlikely to see any compensation, if you've hired the car then you have a much better chance because you can atleast chase the hire company. hiring out a car in italy is like sticking a 'kick me' sign to your own back, and thats why it costs. (apart from this, i love Italy)
Not wanting to argue with anyone, I will mention that I have an italian friend who was knocked off her bicycle and partially lost sight on one eye. The driver's insurance paid her a tidy sum (don't know how much) which she invested and has some income from. So at least some italian insurers work like those in this country.....
