Unaware police and highway patrol people will probably be astonished when they see it bears no photo, but as Norman says, its fine to use.

I use mine all the time - most recently a month ago - when hiring cars and driving in lots of different states. Mind you, I have never yet been "pulled over".

Looking at your other question about moving to the US the answer is no you can't, not long term. You can use it for a short period while settling in but will eventually have to get a licence in the state you are living in. The period your UK licence is valid will vary by state.

if you do, i wouldnt worry about it ... they do it in a car park or school playground, and as lond as ypou can go and stop, thats about it!

It varies from state to state - but probably yes to taking a test. Google for 'DMV name of state' - and you should be able to find out.

I used to live in NJ a few years ago, and drove on my UK (paper) license. As I recall, this was fine for 6 months, after which the law was that I had to take a State test and get a local license.

I 'forgot' to do this, but on renewing my insurance for a 2nd year, the insurer started demanding a local driving license. I strung it along a while, when coincidentally I returned to the UK. But, in retrospect, it was not ideal, and lucky I never had recourse to my insurance...
