confused with liquids on plane
9 Answers
Hi
I am going on holiday next week and I am confused as to what I am able to take on board such as shampoos etc. I have read on the BA website that it needs to be in a clear seperate plastic zipped bag, but it sounds like I need to put this in my hand luggage and have to take it out at the x-ray bit. Cant i just put it in the main luggage? tia

All drinks bought before you go through x ray and security have to be thrown away but you can buy water and other duty free bits on the other side.Hope that helps?
I've done that, Danny... it's called packing light! If I'm away more than 2 weeks (cruise or otherwise) I usually have to check luggage in, but not otherwise. Of course I seldom travel with ballgowns, cowboy boots etc, which does help.
Remember that liquids may also include medicines, ointments etc that you have to take on board with you, for fear your luggage will go missing and you won't be able to replace them abroad. As said, they're handing out the plastic bags at airports outside the security checks and Xrays.

For the avoidance of misunderstanding, the strict statement is that EACH container (bottle, jar, tube, etc.) may only be a maximum of 100ml total capacity - and that is regardless of whether partly full or even empty. The total collection of all containers must be placed in a clear, resealable bag of a maximum total volume of 1 litre (I think I'm right in saying). Not all airports are religious about this but most are - much to my surprise, after passing through security recently our son produced from his hand baggage a nearly full 1 litre bottle of water. At another airport a lady was stripped of her still sealed duty free perfume purchases, in spite of the receipt being there for all to see - she and I discussed which member of staff would get which perfume. Contact lens fluid is sold in bottles which range from 120ml upward. As always, rules are there for abusing in both directions (common sense is not necessarily shown by those whose nation so often claim it) - the Data Protection Act is an example of a law that is used as an obstruction.
I can never understand why people want to take shampoo and hair dryer in their hand luggage, after all you cant wash your hair on the the flight can you ?
Wrap shampoo bottle in a plastic supermarket bag and pack in suitcase, then if it leaks it wont go all over your clothes , personally I tape all bottle tops with sellotape first, after once having a nasty experience and all clothes ruined.
Have a good holiday.
