help from my ab friends again please
I am hoping to meet up with a friend in New York in the summer for a few days, but don't want to stay in NY this year. Will only have a few days so don't want to travel too far from there, as it is easy for me to fly there. Could any of you recommend somewhere nice to go for a few days? Do Americans 'do' seaside holidays? Thanks for any suggestions.

Seaside holidays? NY'ers hit the beaches in 'the season'. Some even rent houses in the Hamptons (area towards east end of Long Island) for the whole period. It is quite possible to do a day trip to lovely beaches from Manhattan, using public transport. The Long Island shore has some fantastic towns/beaches.
NJ'ers have the Jersey Shore, again some fantastic beaches, though several only allow access for town residents (one called (I think) Lavalett comes to mind) so making public beaches (Point Pleasant comes to mind) a bit of a zoo. There are exceptions where you can get day passes (example: Sea Gert) for under $10. The most popular (thought of as the best) is Cape May. But if you are heading there over a summer weekend, you would probably need to book accomodation weeks in advance...

How about Staten Island.
It is one of the NY boroughs, but even though it is just a few miles from Manhaten it is very rural. You can get a ferry from the southern tip of Manhatten to Staten Island.

Parts of Staten Island are like rural England.
The old capital, Richmond Town, is preserved as a living museum. Here is the web site for the museum

Even though you are just a few miles from Manhatten it will seem like another world.
