Indian visa duration

I will be holidaying in India later this year and need to get a visa but am confused as to how long they are valid for. I know they are valid from the day of issue but for how long - I dont want to apply to early. Thanks for yoru reply

As I read the notes on the application form, there isn't a fixed validity period for a tourist visa. The applicant has to state the dates of their visit and a visa will be granted which lasts long enough to cover the required period.

they are valid for 6 months only, the recent visa I have now expires on 7th May and I leave for India on the 5th, so they have made me buy another one as it wont cover the whole 5 week holiday. I believe you could at one time, purchase a yearly one, but you would have to ask when at the embassy, when I asked they said no they were only issueing 6 month visas.
If you are going in person you can collect same day, see other postings for last week.
