where is the best place in mainland uk to take my 5 grandchildren on holiday.somewhere with plenty to do but not a rip off. ages 5,8 10,11 and 11 again

Another option would be to go to the Haven camp Hafan Y Mor in North Wales.

I went there a couple of years ago with some children and there was PLENTY for them to do.
This is a large camp that has a HUGE swimming complex with flumes etc, plus other plays areas.
There is entertainment EVERY night and the kids will find there is plenty to do while they are there.
Most of the entertainment is included in the price so you do not need to pay extra for the swimming or the evening entertainment.
The do half board so you could have breakfast and evening meal included.
There are some caravans but also self contained chalets so you can take yourself (you can also stay in a self contained chalet AND have the half board meals).

It is also in a lovely area, with Snowdon nearby, and you are on the Llyn Peninsula, which is a beautiful part of North Wales.

Please allow me to give my support to VHG's suggestion of finding somewhere in North Wales.
I live in East Anglia, so I'm close to places like Great Yarmouth and Clacton. I also visit south coast resorts, such as Brighton and Eastbourne quite often. I sometimes go to resorts further up the east coast like Skegness. Wherever I go, I find that seaside food and entertainment can be expensive. However, whenever I go to North Wales, I'm constantly surprised by how much cheaper everything is. (e.g. a boat trip which costs between �6 to �8 per person in most places around here will only be about �2 to �3 in North Wales).
A few years ago, I took a long day trip to Rhyl, with a friend's 10-year-old son with me. (250 miles each way, to have 7 hours in Rhyl)). When I got back, I worked out what we'd spent (on meals, boat trips, the fairground, etc) and, despite the cost of the fuel, it was probably less than driving 50 miles, each way, to an East Anglian resort where the prices were much higher.
North Wales offers excellent value!

not sure where you are travelling from but have known various friends and family to love Cornwall. Not been myself but these people have loved it so much have been happy to travel from Scotland and go back again the following year. Sister and her kids go camping one friend they were caravaning - both said were not expensive trips.
