If a roundtrip flight has a stopover on the outbound flight and I choose not to fly from the stopover city to the destination city (even though I've paid for it), will it affect my return flight (leaving from the destination city) in any way? Are there general airline rules for this?

Best do it by writing so as to have proof of their reply to avoid any later complications.
