My husband and I are both in our early 60's and we have been twice to Cyprus, each time in early October - lovely weather. We loved it !! We have been to Paphos which was very nice. Can recommend the Cypria Bay Hotel, lovely lawns overlooking the sea and a small beach, also a nice long walk to the harbour.
However, we preferred Protaras. We stayed at the Constantine the Great Hotel. Very nice and directly on the beach. Also, it is very close to the "strip" and all the evening activities. I recommend the 'water show' with lovely music playing in time to water fountains, you can have a meal or a drink in the open air - lovely.
Everywhere incyprus is beautiful. my husband and i have been to both the west and east coasts both are loverly, but we think the east coast has the edge. Highly recommend the Penera Beach Hotel in Penera which is just on the outskirts of Protarus, ther is enough going on in Penera to keep you entertained, but if you do fancy a livelier night out its about 5 in a cab to protarus. Have a great time. If you choose Paphos which is a very busy resort lots of english there the Nureus Hotel is excellent value for money and the staff are really nice. Also try www.tripadvisor.co.uk you will get reviews about hotels anywhere in the world you might like to stay in in the future.
Would also recommend Polis on the north coast of the west end of the island - quite but easy to get to the attractions like the Akamas peneinsula, and also to Paphos etc.

In Paphos, almost too many hotels as now very developed, but there are some good small places to stay that offer a taste of the real Cyprus rather than a bland 'normal' hotel.

Also suggest a stay in Pano Panagia up in the hills about 40 mins from Paphos so easy to get too. and another good base to use. Lots of great cafes to choose, good walking base, not too hot either as you are up in the hills but still good and warm in Sept.,

Have a look at http://www.agrotourism.com.cy for some really good choices of accommodation. This site offers quality, small facilities all over the island and promote responsible agro-tourism to visitors, putting funding back into the local economies and supporting small scale operations in the communities.

Hope this helps...
Both south and North Cyprus offer 300 days of sunshine a year, good food, friendly people and a wealth of ancient historical sites.

Personally, I recommend North Cyprus, because its much less developed than the south of the island. The countryside is breathtaking, the beaches vast and uncrowded, and the prices cheaper. The Turkish Cypriot food is great, the people friendly and eager to speak English, and flights get cheaper by the week.

You will love Kyrenia, a historic town with a stunningly beautiful harbour lined with great restaurants. Go in September and it'll be less crowded too! Try the Dome hotel for a taste of old-world comfort.

The best web site on North Cyprus by far is http://www.cyprus44.com, packed with information and with links to cheap flights to North Cyprus.
I would recommened the Mayfair Hotel which is in Paphos, its very quiet and set away from the main road. It's only 10 minutes away from main bars and restaurants but there is around 7 restaurants and bars like 30 seconds from the hotel, kiosk just around the corner. The hotel has 3 pools and 2 children pools, rooms are lovely with some stunning views of the whole of Paphos. I stayed here last year and am returning again with a friend in 2009.
