Has good weather all year round, and is quite reserved, no lager louts etc. Few children either as no beaches to speak of. It is a beautiful island with lovely walks up in the mountains along the levadas. Can be as gentle or strenuous as you fancy. Only 4 hours by air. Would suggest staying in Funchal unless you really want it very quiet.
Take a look at Strawberry World Madeira website, has quite a lot of info, pictures and live webcams.
Can recommend Villa Vicencia about 1 km west of main Funchal, walkable or bus to centre but enough around the area anyway (known as the Monumental Lido area)
Guess you are mid 40's / 50's, perfect age for this wonderful island.

I agree with Sasha, I lived and worked in Puerto Rico for 6 months and from Oct to Feb it does quieten down but the weather is fantastic. It is hilly but there are an abundance or cheap air conditioned taxis and some great sites:
1. sand dunes and camels at maspalomas
2. Friday market at Puerto Mogan
3. Jeep safari into the mountains and their equivelent of the Grand Canyon
4. Boat trip to Tenerife and Mount Tiede
5. Day trip shopping to Las Palmas

If you don't mind driving one can get to the Canaries by ferry from Algeciras(a Spanish port about 10 miles west of Gibraltar).
Brittany ferries have regular crossings from Plymouth to Santander. You would then have a gentle 2 day drive(one night stop)from Santander to Algeciras.
This all presupposes that you have sufficient time.
Also of course the north coast of Spain/Northen Portugal is not as frenetic as the southern beaches so you could even make this area your holiday place. As I remember disembarkation at Santander is about 0800ish so one could easily drive to these areas in half-a-day.

While it be sort of a "long haul", a trip to tue US Southwest may be in order, maybe Las Vegas for excitement and warm weather, with plenty of sight-seeing opportunities nearby of the magnificent and multitudinous faces of the Desert Southwest! The possibilities are too numerous to list so I suggest you check out this Web Site:
