what can i put in my hold luggage?

I was always under the impression that any aerosols or pressurised containers had to go in your hand luggage, as did all electrical equipment. Is this true or can i put these in my hold baggage?
with the new laws about liquids i wouldn't be able to take my hairspray in my hand luggage i want to check its ok to put it in the hold.

Spudqueen's link only deals with the current security regulations, which are additional to the normal IATA rules. These can be found on most airline's websites. (It won't matter which one you look at because the regulations are standard across all airlines).

Modern aerosol containers are designed to be strong enough to withstand the pressure differences associated with being placed in a vacuum. So, they can safely be placed in hold baggage.

Electrical equipment can also be placed in hold baggage but remember to leave your case unlocked, so that it can easily be checked if an item looks suspicious when it's X-rayed.

just to add to Buenchico's helpful post, if you're worried about leaving checked luggage unlocked (and who wouldn't be) you can buy special padlocks approved by the US authorities which they will be able to open and close again
