I go through quite a few airports and the rule is the same; take your laptop out to scan individually.
Between you me, a sharp object isn't the only weapon we can have on board; a belt or tie can strangle and a heavy bag could knock someone out, but that's the rule....

erm forgot to mention that I will be flying from Italy to england, basically it is 45 X 45 X 20 cm and the maximums on my ticket say 40X50X20 so I'm bigger by 5 cm on the 40 side but will it matter ? i've seen some fairly large cases carried as handluguage the desktop can go under the seat no problem i just don't want it thrown around in the luguage and possibly stolen
At many airports, the size of hand baggage is checked by seeing if it will fit inside a metal frame with the maximum dimensions. If it won't fit, it won't be accepted. Additionally, you should remember that you're only allowed one item of cabin baggage. If you did manage to get your PC accepted (which I think is extremely unlikely), you'd not be allowed to take anything else.
Ryanair are particularly strict about insisting that hand baggage is placed in the lockers, and not under seats, during take-off. My friend was made to put her small, light handbag in the locker, as it was unacceptable for it to be placed under the seat.

yes i remember ryan air being particular with putting eveything away, I thought they didn't mind stuff under the seats providing it is not the back seats used for emergency equipment storage,
I have contacted the airport and after harrasing them for a definite answer (some idiot was clever enough to actually take the time to reply "hm well I'm not sure i don't beleive so") they have said that i may carry the motherboard and hard disks as handluguage as i suggested as an alternative, the rest I'll put in the suitcase, I'm only worried about the 4 hard disks (total of 880 GB) and the motherboard the rest is not that expensive to replace if worth anything at this time
