it should have the date you got it and the date it ceases to be valid (which will be exactly 10 years apart) printed in it by your photo - doesn't it?

As jno states, there should by an exact date of expiration e.g. 09 Aug 07, but this date is not necessarily exactly 10 years after the date of issue as it is possible to have up to 9 months unexpired validity added to a new passport if you renew it early.

that's a point, kempie, though all my passports have been dated exactly 10 years apart regardless of the odd few spare weeks in advance I've got them. Perhaps I failed to request specifically that they be credited to my account? Anyway, expiry date should definitely be there down to the last second (almost)

no It states that it is valid from the 16 jul 1998 and expires 07 Aug and thats it....

The passport fee goes up in Oct so get a new one now. I got one last week and it took 6days from posting to getting it returned.
