Has anyone been on holiday to this region, visiting smaller towns, rather than the big cities? I would love to hear your comments. Is it worth going? I thought a drive from Chicago to Toronto visiting places en route. Many thanks in advance.
That's gonna take some time. A lake is a lake is a lake. They all look pretty much the same. You can't see the other side because they are Great.
East of Toronto we have Sandbanks Park, miles of sand. Some tiny towns. You'd need a guide book to point out the interesting stops, if any. Chicago looks to be a very happenin' place. I know people who have gone there and loved it. Would take a long time. Gas is $1 a litre. I wouldn't do it myself.
Gas at $1 a litre is dirt cheap to us europeans whether that be a US$ or a CAN$....
I've sort of driven round Lake Ontario and found it a bit disappointing. There are actually very few places you can get near the lake - most of the shore is private land with no access to the beach (if there is such a thing) and built up with holiday homes. Mostly you are viewing it from a distance.
The International car ferry at the east end of the lake is interesting - takes a maximum of 9 cars... And you are then in the 1000 Islands area with good boat trips.
If you want to avoid big cities it's a good idea - but don't expect too much
