New York is great but tiring and two weeks there can be tough. Give it three days, then go off to California for a week, coming back to NY for another few days. Flights to NY are plentiful and comparitively cheap. Don't discount Newark, nice airport and quite handy for NY. Internal flights in th US are good, cheap and easy. Watch the maximum luggage requirements though, they differ with each airline. I normally do a search on expedia.com to see who flies where and then go to the airline's own website to look for specials. Jet Blue, Spirit, Transair and other smaller airlines do great internet deals. The only other thing to do is to note the time diferences between the coasts. I would book everything here as you get better terms as a visitor that the Yanks do.
I would do one or the other.
They are a long way from each other (USA is a wide country) and It is about a 4 hour flight.
While New York is great it can be a bit frenetic and drive you mad after a few days. There are places outside of New York like the Catskill mountains but I am not sure what type of holiday you are looking for.
The West Coast has a whole range of things to do. San Francisco is an amazing city and much more relaxed and enjoyable than New York.
It is one of the best cities in the US for walking round (many US cities dont really suit walking) and there are loads of touristy things to do.
Also on the west coast you have Los Angeles (Hollywood, Beverley Hills etc) and San Diago.
On the wes6t coast you also have Giant Redwoods, Yosemite Park, Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon and so on. Also some theme parks like Disneyland if you are into that sort of thing.
More than enough to do for 2 weeks on the west coast.
I have been to both coasts and given the choice would go to the west coast.

Maybe you could try Amtrak. The train leaves Penn Station NY mid afternoon and gets to Chicago approx 9.30 the next day. You could stay in Chicago and then get the California Zephyr or Southwest Chief to the West Coast. This is a 2 night ride but you can get off at Flagstaff ( from the SWChief I believe ) and visit Grand Canyon or Monument Valley. Should get you to the coast in 7 days depending how long you stop along the way. Sounds a long time on the train but they are much diffferent from our trains and you will enjoy watching the sights from ythe observation cars.Try San Francisco rather than LA, much safer and a lot more fun
