When my friend and I went we did
Day we landed - Macys (the food in the basement is really good - we ate there) and Times Square
Day 2 - Staten Island Ferry, Wall Street, Ground Zero, helicopter flight, Greenwich Village, Little Italy and China Town
Day 3 - Central Park and Metropolitan Museum of Art, Empire State
Day 4 - Fifth Avenue, Grand Central Station
Day we were going home - Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Centre) and last minute shopping.
Whatever you decide to do you'll have a fantastic time!
Make sure you visit the Christmas tree and skating here too ..

Do the open top bus tour. We did the red bus tour, and it offered 4 different routes, or loops as they call them, for 2 days unlimited travel for $49. They covered Uptown, Downtown, Brooklyn, and the Night Loop (which is a combination of the other three, which only runs at night).

They are also "hop on, hop off" so they not only enable you to see all the attractions, but they stop at each on so that you can get off eg at the Empire State, go up it, come back down and hop back on the next bus that comes along (approx every 10 minutes)

We thought this was an excellent way of seeing all the sights, and on the second day we mostly just used the buses for transport as we had done most of the sights, and found that one of their buses stopped right beside our hotel so we were able to use it to get to Times Sq as well as using the Night Loop to get home!
I had a day downtown a day midtown and a day uptown, just get a basic guide book from the library which will tell u all the sights.

One thing I also did was book a helicopter ride online befiore I got there and it worked out a lot cheaper than booking it when you got there.

Personally I didn't bother with the bus just walked and used the subway.
the spudqueen itinerary is an excellent one. Go to MOMA if you like modern art; I'd also recommend the cruises round Manhattan - they start from somewhere on the west side and take about 3 hours - but only in decent weather. Worth enjoying the shops as prices are much lower generally but (a) they'll add tax and (b) compare prices online in advance if there's anything specific you want. Rather than pay through the nose for hotel breakfasts, there are excellent diners everywhere.
my mum just went. She went on a boat trip that took her all around which looked good. and she went to that toy shop that they had in the film "BIG" with the lifesize piano!! she had her photo taken with a lifesize model of the simpsons also (theres a space on the end of the sofa for people to sit!) that was an amusing photo! She did bore me with lots of pictures of buildings and the like......sounds like the ice rink would be cool in the winter.
Macy's Christmas window displays are a must
Lunch at MOMA very popular worth going five or ten mins before noon to sneak in before rush.

For good stock food I like the heartland brewery in Empire State, look at the night time lights then pop in for supper...

if it's very special you have to book ahead but try the

roof top revolving restaurant here :http://www.marriott.com/hotels/hotel-information/restaurant/nycmq-new-york-marriott-marquis-times-square/

for a laugh there is always

I have been there twice and it has been good, but reading reviews on another site it would appear that it is one to miss before evening Broadway shows.

Try the parker meridian for a good fair priced burger ...
