In the UK, Brighton always has plenty to offer. There's plenty of good entertainment and hundreds of great restaurants and bars. The North Laine area is great for finding some quirky little shops, and the city is a great base for touring the south coast:

As you are only about 1.5 hours drive from Newcastle, why not book a mini break to Amsterdam? If you sail midweek it is cheaper, often from about 45 per person. You can extend your stay by booking a couple of nights in a hotel.
Have a look at the DFDS website (sorry, I'm rubbish at posting links). Mr Overall and I have done this trip a few times. Last time we snaffled 2 extra nights in a good hotel for 40 each and noticed that the hotel price shown in reception was listed at 100 per night. Bargain!
Also, as Xmas won't be too far away, the trip will be ideal for you to stock up on booze/pressies without the luggage restrictions you get on planes.
How about poland, we've just booked flights to gdansk for 70 for the two of us and found a b and b for 135 for four nights. |t's cheap to eat out and plenty to see. You can fly with wizz air from doncaster.
Krakow is very nice but only easy jet and ryanair fly there at present.
Gratons cedar lodges are gorgeous they're in Devon (Berrynarbor) and the hosts are exceptionally friendly, they cant do enough for you. plus to surrounding area is lovely, its slightly out of season so shouldn't be too expensive

I need a holiday!

thanks very much for the replies people! i'm going to have a little look on jet2.com and see what it comes up with.
Why not look at lastminute.com - we were just researching a 4n break in Marrakech and that was coming in around 250pp incl flights for a 4* hotel incl breakfast!!!. We have actually decided to go to Nice instead for around the same price.
