Has anyone travelled to Lima, Peru in the last couple of years, and what was it like? How safe is it to walk on the streets by day/night? How are the people and the food etc?

It's absolutely brilliant! My father went to work there when my brothers were young, and when I had the chance to go, I took it. The sights are amazing, and yes, you feel a lot safer than you might in Cuba, for instance. The tourist spots are still worth looking at, and I found the people to be very friendly. You also get an excellent "deal" on fake watches!!!
You need to keep your wits about you of you are in the centro area, but It's no more dangerous than London or New York. Just be sensible. The Miraflores and Barranco areas are really nice. ( I'd recommend these as areas to stay in rather than the centre. As for food you have to try the ceviche, ( raw fish marinated in citrus juice).
It's not safe to wlak in the city centre day or night. Do not take any typ of watch other than the cheapest plastic. Food is also difficult. Don't east any salads, tomato skins or uupeeled fruit. And definitately never ever ever drink mineral water which has been served with the top off. Always safest to ask for gassy water as that can't be adulterated. Great place though, I'm glad I went.
It is pretty dodgy, and I would not be out much after dark. If you do, use a proper taxi to get back to your hotel.

As another poster said, leave your jewellery and expensive kit at home, preferably the UK.

I don't remember any memorable meals in Peru, least of all Lima. Apart from a plate of ceviche, which was a pound of slices of various raw fish with lemon/lime juice squeezed over. Not memorable for being good though.

The sights in Peru are great, but as you I've suggested above the going is not always easy...
