Some routes however are fixed fare. From Newark or JFK airports into Manhattan are $45 + toll ($4) + tip (say $8-10).
Last time I left Manhattan to go to JFK, I had a bit of a barney with the cab driver. Seems that the fixed fare is now also applying TO the airport too.

You haven't identified where you're travelling to in the states. There is no federal, or even state regulation for taxi rates, each city and even certain municipalities have different rules. For example, New Orleans charges by parish and time, Manhattan uses the meter, except for kep points such as airports, which also have additional fees for bridges or tunnels...and you jolly well better give a tip as well..talk about a barney! Let me know which city and I'll give you the 'goss' on which is best...also, in New York CIty, in addition to metered taxis, there is the 'livery' service. That is a sedan car service, which I much prefer over New York taxis as you're not sitting in a cage!! I'll be on line a few hours tonight, so let me know. Bon Voyage..Fr Bill
