I've never been to St Petersburg, but I went to Leningrad and Moscow for a week in 1985. It's the best holiday I've ever had and Leningrad is much better than Moscow - more history. Loads of museums and galleries and things.
Never been and very envious. Have a great time Tat.
Me, me, I've been. Had a great time but you do need to be careful. Mr apricot was followed out of a bank, fortunately we are savvy travellers and we have a system of checking whether we are being followed. It was evident after 4 left turns that we had a large bloke on our tails at which point I lost my temper, turned on my heels and let out such a torrent of abuse that the bloke just turned and ran away. If you need a toilet just go into any of the posh hotels, oh and carry toilet paper with you. Lots to see and do. Enjoy Tat.
The best currency to take is euros as everything is priced in euros. If you take dollars you will have to change them to roubles so you will pay commission twice. You do need to be extra careful about pickpockets and muggers particularly outside museums, churches etc. Just ignore people trying to sell you postcards, jigsaws, hats and other things as they will probably have accomplices who will try to rob you.
